February 1, 1960 - Brown v. Board of Education (1954) prohibited racial segregation in public schools. However, segregation remained rampant in many public facilities, including restaurants and buses. On this day in 1960, four college students sat down at an all-white lunch counter in Woolworth's in Greensboro, North Carolina and ordered doughnuts and coffee. When refused service, they stayed at the counter until the store closed - thus sparking a movement of sit-ins in segregated restaurants around the country.
